Fish is a generalist character that's good at all stages of the game. He's considered the default character due to his lack of specialization and ease of use, and many modded mutants are built off of him.

Abilities

Gets More Ammo

Fish gets 25% more Ammo from all sources rounded up besides , including his starting ammo. This makes it very hard for him to run out for his weapons and be free to fire wildly.

This bonus applies to all characters in Co-op as long as one Fish is present.

Finds His Guitar

At 0-1 Fish will always find his Guitar, an extremely potent melee weapon.

There will not be more Guitars with multiple people playing Fish in Co-op.

Can Roll

Fish's active is a Roll in the direction of the cursor. This is NOT a dodge roll and has a purely mobility focus, allowing Fish to navigate faster or quickly create distance between a threat.

Throne Butt converts Roll to Water Boost, which is a continual dash as long as the button is held.

Water Boost is typically a preference choice, though has a mobility benefit compared to the base Roll.

Ultra Mutations

Confiscate adds a 20% chance for an Ammo Chest, Weapon Chest or Medkit Chest to drop from an enemy instead of an Ammo Pickup, Weapon or Medkit respectively. The Ammo Chest can be a Present Chest or I.D.P.D. Chest instead, and the Weapon Chest can be a Cursed Weapon Chest if you have a Crown.

Confiscate works very well with continued Looping, as chests will not despawn like normal pickups. This can also help your Co-op Partner(s) greatly.

Gun Warrant lets Fish fire Weapons at no ammo cost for 7 seconds upon entering a level, as indicated by a lightning effect on him.

and/or are almost a necessity for maximizing the benefit of Gun Warrant with slower weapons, and the Ultra isn't very useful for them otherwise.

Building

Preferred Weapons

Fish is comfortable with the majority of weapons in Nuclear Throne, but Bullet and Energy weapons pair well with his ammo economy, and Shell and Melee with the mobility his Roll provides.

Especially ammo hungry guns such as the Super Plasma Cannon, Quadruple Machinegun and Double Minigun will be much less risky to use as Fish.

Co-op

With his consistently high strength and utility in giving everyone more ammo, Fish is good for Co-op in nearly all cases and can do well with the majority of mutants.

Do note that stacking Fish will not lead to the ammo multiplier increasing, or for more Guitars to spawn at 0-1.

Partners

  • will gain more ammo from using his active and Fish will make his downside less severe.
  • The Medkit Chests spawned by have good synergy with , not because of her regaining max HP from Medkit Chests but because they don't despawn and can let her revive reliably.
  • If not taken by Fish, can get great use out of his Guitar.
  • will have to Gamble less away with Fish supplying ammo.
  • and will love Fish's presence due to him mitigating their high Ammo consumption. Fish himself can get many weapons to pick from at Y.V.'s Crib and will further boost the effects of Steroids' Ultras.

Burdens

  • makes more than enough ammo on its own and doesn't bring much to the table, though it doesn't directly hinder you.
  • passive doesn't stack with Fish's, and he will likely steal everything if allowed into the wasteland.

Golden Weapons

  • While somewhat lackluster, the Golden Machinegun is easier on the fingers for players who Roll frequently due to it being fully automatic, and it is a slight upgrade to the Revolver.
  • The Golden Screwdriver and Golden Wrench can work with Fish's mobility. Additionally, they allow him to vary his ammo stockpile early on.
  • The Golden Shotgun makes Fish's early game easy, allowing him to quickly deal with groups of weak enemies alongside reliably killing and in one shot.

Crowns

Synergetic Crowns

  • The downside of the Crown of Guns is less drastic on Fish, as he will have more ammo than other mutants and will get more ammo from dropped Weapons.
  • The Crown of Protection similarly has its downside downplayed and can serve as an extra source of healing.

Anti-Synergetic Crowns

  • Crown of Love is usually overkill for Fish's ammo outside of specific situations, and often times the utility of the Rad Canister/Medkit Chest and Weapon Chest will be wanted.

Mutations

Recommended Mutations

  • will ensure Fish's extra ammo will not go to waste, allowing him to both spend and receive more.
  • is generally very useful, with it specifically helping Fish protect himself while Rolling.
  • Paired with his Roll, will greatly aid Fish in securing pickups.
  • and let Fish spend his extra ammo faster and are especially helpful with maximizing the benefit of Gun Warrant.

Lower Priority Mutations
