The game consists of a wide selection of characters, some of which will help you achieve your goal of finding the evil characters disguised among them. Other characters will make this goal harder for you.
The win condition of the game is to kill all “Evil” aligned characters before your health reaches 0.
In the event your health reaches 0 the round is over resulting in a loss.
Character Atributes
Alignment
Characters are divided under the two alignments of “Good” and “Evil” with characters further being divided into two character types of each.
The “Good” alignment consists of characters that will generally assist you in your goal of finding the evils. You want to avoid killing them as killing one will cost you health. (Executing a good character will result in the loss of 5 health unless otherwise stated, ex. Knight.)
The “Evil Alignment” consists of characters that will make it harder for you to find them by lying, framing, and sabotaging characters of the “Good Alignment.”
Role
There are four character roles. Two of them, Villager and Outcasts, fall under the “Good” character alignment. The other two, Minion and Demon, fall under the “Evil” character alignment.
Generally villagers are supposed to help you in finding the evils, outcasts are good characters that can hinder you from finding the evils, minions make it harder for you to find the evils, and demons are stronger evil characters that make it harder to find the evils.
The starting number of each character type is shown in the deck count as shown in the example below:
This deck count is the starting number of each type, as such it does not take into account character abilities that modify character types such as Counsellor or Puppeteer.
Conditions
Lie: Their statements are incorrect. Specific characters lie in specific outlined ways. It is never arbitrary
Disguised: The characters are not shown as their actual character when flipped. Disguised characters are revealed on death. Disguised characters do not lie by default.
Corrupted: Effect that makes Villagers Lie or their ability malfunction. Outcasts and Evil cannot be corrupted. Villagers remain corrupted even if the source dies.
In Village: The characters on the playing board. Opposite of "Out of Play"
Out of Play: Characters in the Deck not used by any good characters. Opposite of "In Village"
Cured: A character that was previously Corrupted but is no more (exclusive to Alchemist).
Miscellanous
Unless otherwise stated, ex. Shaman, there can only be ONE of each starting character.
If you kill a character it will reveal if that character is disguising or corrupted.
It is possible to use the abilities of dead characters and is advised to.
Text boxes from abilities that do not involve picking a character are determined on reveal of the card.
It is possible for characters to give information that is true on the reveal of the card that is no longer true after another character uses their ability (see Baker)
General Tips
The Deck
The deck is the list of possible characters in play
The is the most important thing to know and analyze prior to flipping any cards. You will not be able to solve the game without knowing what’s in the deck. So before flipping any characters, check for the amount of disguised characters(Drunk, Doppelganger, Shaman) as well as sources of corruption(Plague Doctor, Poisoner, Pooka) in play. Add up how many characters can be corrupted or double claimed and keep that number in mind.
The Village
If you want to maximize your chances of beating the round flip over all characters before doing anything(unless it’s Lilis, then pick as you find appropriate). This will cost you points(+10 points per unrevealed card when killing evil), but having all info is massively helpful to solve. If you are more confident in your ability, flip one at a time based on your own judgement to maximize points. In this case, some of the advice below may not apply.
When this is done, check your outcasts:
If you do not have a plague doctor, adjust your corruption count accordingly
Beware an evil player making use of a disguised drunk/doppelganger to claim bombardier or plague doctor With those 2 pieces of info as well as the character abilities, you can start trying to figure out who is evil and kill them. Three additional important pieces of informations:
The demon does not double claim good characters or be an outcast. Hence, if you manage to kill the demon, all other characters claiming the same must be evil or the Drunk.
Certain abilities which pick characters can be used once per day(only with Lilis in play)
For characters with binary information: Characters making identical true statements are on the good team. Characters making identical false statements are evil/corrupted. Therefore pay attention to identical statements and sources of corruption to determine whole groups as good or evil. There cannot be 3 good characters making identical statements(or at least, exceedingly unlikely)
Double Claim: 2 or more characters claiming the same character
