You cannot place traps on tiles occupied by enemies.
You can place traps on tiles occupied by other items. This will destroy the other item.
Traps are very useful for two things, stopping charging enemies and stopping enemies that run away.
Compared to other traps, Flaming Trap deals the most damage on its own, dealing a minimum of 13 damage on enemies not immune to burn, however, It does not offer any utility more than what all traps provide.
The trap creates a flaming tile when the trap is activated, not when it is placed.
Enemies do not consider traps placed by the player when pathfinding. They do, however, try to avoid a trap placed by an enemy the turn it is placed.
